the Voice of the Martyrs

The Persecuted Church

What moves you?  The beauty of nature.  The laughter of a child.  The desire for wealth or fame.  Perhaps devastation, the wake of an earthquake or tsunami. Maybe a hungry child or mistreated child.  For me, I am brought to tears by the photographs of persecuted Christians.  What upsets my soul, perhaps more than anything else, is the fact that throughout the world, Christians are tortured for their faith.  Persecuted Christians show a resiliency, a dedication, that makes western Christianity look pale and shallow.  These brothers and sisters have bad days we cannot begin to imagine.  Their torturers take flames to their Bibles, homes, and bodies.  And yet, they persist, striving toward the prize that we so take for granted.  The persecuted church is not alone, they have a voice, the Voice of the Martyrs (VOM).

VOM is an advocate for the persecuted church. How many are persecuted?  How many are being tortured?  One too many.  Today, there are dozens of countries considered to be restricted countries, where government policy prohibits access to Bibles and results in unspeakable torment of believers.  In addition to the restricted countries are the hostile countries which have a policy permitting Christianity, but cultural dictates otherwise.

VOM programs seek to educate and minister to the persecuted.

  • VOM has been a member of ECFA since 1993
  • Reported program expenses are in line with comparable ministries
  • Program expenses are split between education/advocacy efforts and foreign ministries, roughly ¼ and ¾ respectively
  • VOM has received Ministry Watch’s Shining Light honor multiple times

I invite you to look closely at what your missing, be thankful if you are blessed to live in a tolerant country, and reach out to those in need so that you can do your part to encourage and support these brothers and sisters in Christ.

About VOM

The Voice of the Martyrs is a non-profit, inter-denominational Christian organization dedicated to assisting the persecuted church worldwide. VOM was founded in 1967 by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned 14 years in Communist Romania for his faith in Christ. His wife, Sabina, was imprisoned for three years. In the 1960s, Richard, Sabina, and their son, Mihai, were ransomed out of Romania and came to the United States. Through their travels, the Wurmbrands spread the message of the atrocities that Christians face in restricted nations, while establishing a network of offices dedicated to assisting the persecuted church. The Voice of the Martyrs continues in this mission around the world today through the following main purposes:

Our ministry is based on Hebrews 13:3:      Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

We help Christians who are or have been, persecuted for their involvement in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. We provide medical assistance, food, clothing, and other forms of aid.

We support Christians who are willing to invite their fellow men, even their persecutors, to Jesus Christ through faithful deeds of love in a hostile environment. We supply Bibles, literature, radios, and other evangelistic tools.

We encourage persecuted Christians by giving their testimony a voice, informing Christians in the USA to know how to help. We believe that the lives and the testimony of persecuted Christians is a vital part of the fellowship of all believers and will challenge and strengthen the faith of Christians everywhere.

VOM: Five Main Purposes

VOM helps, loves and encourages persecuted Christians through our five main purposes.

  1. To encourage and empower Christians to fulfill the Great Commission in areas of the world where they are persecuted for their involvement in propagating the gospel of Jesus Christ. We accomplish this by providing Bibles, literature, radio broadcasts, medical assistance, and other forms of aid.
  2. To give relief to the families of Christian martyrs in these areas of the world.
  3. To equip local Christians to love and win to Christ their enemies who are opposed to the gospel in countries where believers are actively persecuted for their Christian witness.
  4. To undertake projects of encouragement, helping believers rebuild their lives and Christian witness in countries that have formerly suffered Communist oppression.
  5. To emphasize the fellowship of all believers by informing the world of atrocities committed against Christians and by remembering their courage and faith.
