SeaWorld to End Orca Breeding Program

Big, huge, news from SeaWorld today. CEO Joel Manby submitted an op-ed to the Los Angeles Times indicating SeaWorld will end its orca breeding program this year.  Manby’s piece opens with a reminder that when the SeaWorld program began, orcas were not the beloved animals they are today.  The improved orca image is in large part due to SeaWorld efforts over the years.  With an end to breeding programs, the current SeaWorld orcas will be the last SeaWorld orcas. “For as long as they live, the orcas at SeaWorld will stay in our parks. They’ll continue to receive the highest-quality care, based on the latest advances in marine veterinary medicine, science and zoological best practices.” for more information: LA Times Op Ed SeaWorld Cares – Future Truth About...

Universal Studios Florida

The Universal Studios Florida amusement park stands in stark contrast to the controversial addition of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Universal’s Islands of Adventure.  Instead, Universal Studios is founded on wholesome attractions that feature ogres, vampires, mummies, and aliens, to name a few. While there isn’t a single blockbuster section prompting early entry as is available at Islands of Adventure, there is so much to do at Universal Studios that you’ll want to arrive early to ensure you get to all the fun. Park Layout The park has six sections based on various, sometimes not so obvious, themes that correspond with the featured attractions.  We’ll take you clockwise around the park in order to hit the ride with the longest wait time first to ensure that the rest of your day is more flexible. Production Central The park...

Islands of Adventure

While the newest and most popular attraction at Islands of Adventure is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, don’t overlook that this theme park sister to Universal Studios Orlando was plenty good before Harry came to town. Islands of Adventure is so named because of the several themed “islands” that make up the park.  We’ll hit some of the highlights below and as usual have a couple advisories to pass along in the event you want to pass on a couple of attractions.  If you intend to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, plan to arrive early and make that your first set of stops before the crowds are overwhelming.  See our review for additional details on how to make the most of that section of the park. Six Flags

Amusement parks are a fun and entertaining past time.  But are they family and Christian friendly?  Not always.  So, we put Six Flags to the test.   This past week I took my boys, dad and a neighborhood child to Six Flags in Georgia.  I had not been in a few years and what we encountered was a very pleasant surprise.  Right away the friendly employees greet you with a smile and willingness to assist if needed.  The signage is large and easy to read.  There are maps of the park readily available and color coded by section of the park.  The map is clearly labeled and marked with restrooms, ATM locations, First Aid areas, and designated smoking areas.  We found the restrooms at the entrance to the park and decided to take advantage of the absence of lines.  We found the...

SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld San Diego is a must see for families vacationing in San Diego. The park combines animal exhibits, rides, and shows so that there’s something for everyone to do.  SeaWorld is most famous for Shamu, the killer whale, orca shows.  Sea World’s shows are highly choreographed making these attractions the features to plan your day around.  In addition to the killer whale shows, Sea World shows include dolphins, sea lions, and otters.  During the summer, Sea World also offers Cirque de le Mer, an acrobatic performance with special effects set to music, and nightly fireworks.  There are just a handful of rides at Sea World but a few provide moderate thrills.  Journey to Atlantis is a combo ride that begins as a roller coaster but has a splash finale that may get the front seats wet.  Wild Arctic is...
