San Diego Zoo & Safari Park

A Top 5 Thing To Do In San Diego The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are our top pick for attractions in and around San Diego.  As one of the largest and best known zoos in the world, this destination should be on everyone’s bucket list of to-dos.  San Diego Zoo’s reputation is due in large part to the success of its conservation efforts (e.g. giant pandas viewable at the zoo and white rhino viewable at Safari Park).  Because the zoo is comprised of two locations, you’ll want to allow ample time for both with the Safari Park requiring a bit more time due to its size.  If time permits only one of the San Diego Zoo parks, we personally recommend the San Diego Zoo Safari Park which is a short drive from San Diego in Escondido.  Its...

SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld San Diego is a must see for families vacationing in San Diego. The park combines animal exhibits, rides, and shows so that there’s something for everyone to do.  SeaWorld is most famous for Shamu, the killer whale, orca shows.  Sea World’s shows are highly choreographed making these attractions the features to plan your day around.  In addition to the killer whale shows, Sea World shows include dolphins, sea lions, and otters.  During the summer, Sea World also offers Cirque de le Mer, an acrobatic performance with special effects set to music, and nightly fireworks.  There are just a handful of rides at Sea World but a few provide moderate thrills.  Journey to Atlantis is a combo ride that begins as a roller coaster but has a splash finale that may get the front seats wet.  Wild Arctic is...

USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway is a post World War II aircraft carrier serving key roles in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm.  As the longest serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, the USS Midway served a variety of wartime, peacetime, and humanitarian missions until its decommission in 1992.      The USS Midway museum opened in June 2004 allowing visitors to explore this city at sea.  Admission includes a self-guided audio tour with two settings, standard and family for younger visitors.  Additionally, volunteer guides (docents) are stationed throughout the museum to provide personal stories and color commentary.  In addition to the Midway, visitors can climb on and into the cockpit of dozens of restored aircraft.  Other family friendly activities include interactive exhibits, videos, and flight simulators.   What to know before you go:  Museum hours are normally 10 a.m. to 5...

LEGOLAND California

LEGOLAND earns a position on our top spots for its rides, shows, and last but not least, the LEGOs themselves.  The LEGO artwork and exhibits are spectacular as are how the bricks are incorporated into the very fiber of the park.  LEGOLAND California is located in Carlsbad, 30 minutes north of San Diego and an hour south of Anaheim.  We personally recommend a stay at the Grand Pacific Palisades just a stones throw (short walk) to the park entrance. The Grand Pacific Palisades is a family friendly resort with its own family pool that can serve as an alternative to paying extra to go to the LEGOLAND water park.  For a good choice of hotels with discount prices, visit Where to stay in Anaheim for more information. Bigger kids and thrill seekers will find just a couple rides to...
